Jeffery Sun Young Park: Lost Dokkaebis

December 9, 2022 - February 19, 2023

Stroll Garden is excited to present the first solo exhibition of Los Angeles-based artist Jeffery Sun Young Park. Opening Friday, December 9th from 7-9 PM, “Lost Dokkaebis” is a “celebration of the untold stories of radical queer Coreans* and their impact on the way we express ourselves and love one another.”

Dokkaebis are mischievous nature spirits from Corean folklore. They possess special powers and appear in many different forms. A dokkaebi is an energetic mirror that reflects the spirit and intentions of the humans they encounter. If you are kind they will reward you and if you lie to them they will trick you.

Park’s dokkaebis represent those who boldly walked into the unknown to create their own worlds. The show brings together over 50 stoneware clay figures. The collection of figures are raku fired, with signature crackle effects and unique glaze color variations.

*The spelling of Corea with a C is the original spelling before colonization. As a Corean person, this spelling represents Park’s hopes for a unified Corea.
